In 2012 the Drug Enforcement Administration's New Haven Tactical Diversion Squad opened an investigation into a drug trafficking organization that manufactured fraudulent prescriptions for oxycodone and distributed the drug in the greater New Haven area. The group also purchased legitimate oxycodone prescriptions from individuals.
According to court documents and statements in court, the organization used 'runners' to fill the fraudulent prescriptions at pharmacies throughout Connecticut. Between February 2013 and September 2015 it stole the personal identifying information of more than 50 doctors and medical professionals and fraudulently obtained more than 80,000 units of oxycodone.
On June 16, 2016, a New Haven man pleaded guilty before a U.S. District Judge in Hartford to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute oxycodone. He faced a maximum of 20 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October 11, 2016.
A total of 11 individuals were charged as a result of the investigation. The release does not describe the sentences ultimately imposed.
