The federal government alleged that a Price Chopper Pharmacy in Kansas City, Kansas, owned by a local company, violated the Controlled Substances Act between February 2019 and June 10, 2022. The alleged conduct included dispensing controlled substances before prescriptions were received, improperly partially filling prescriptions, and failing to maintain inventory records for controlled substances.
The Drug Enforcement Administration conducted the investigation. The DEA's diversion program manager for Missouri, Kansas and southern Illinois said pharmacies must dispense medications only after receiving legitimate prescriptions and must then track what they dispense, and that DEA acts when they fail to do so.
In September 2023 the company agreed to a civil settlement of $250,000 to resolve the allegations. The settlement resolves allegations only and is not a finding of liability.
