A registered nurse working at a hospital in Overland Park, Kansas removed vials of fentanyl and hydromorphone from an automated dispensing cabinet in March 2021. According to court documents, he replaced the substances with an alternate liquid and then returned the vials to the cabinet, leaving tampered products in place for patient use.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Criminal Investigations. In November 2021 a federal grand jury in Kansas returned an indictment charging him with two counts of tampering with a consumer product, one count of possession of fentanyl by deception and subterfuge, and one count of possession of hydromorphone by deception and subterfuge.
In March 2023 he was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. As part of the outcome his nursing license was forfeited, ending his ability to practice as a nurse.
