The Nevada State Board of Pharmacy's quarterly disciplinary report describes a pharmaceutical technician who worked at a hospital and set up a fictitious nurse in the hospital pharmacy computer system. The technician gave the made-up nurse full access to all of the hospital's automated dispensing cabinets.
The report says the technician would go into an automated dispensing cabinet, use a pen to pry open the container next to the non-narcotic bin, and use a spoon or paper clip to scoop out Schedule II and III narcotic drugs, which he took for personal use.
The scheme was detected through system access records. The hospital noticed that every time the fictitious nurse was logged on to the computer, the technician was also logged on to the computer system. The technician was arrested, appeared in Justice Court and was convicted of a gross misdemeanor. The court ordered restitution of $7,796.20 and a sentence of two years probation.
The matter came before the Board at its February 22, 2007 meeting on a Notice of Intended Action and Accusation. The technician did not appear despite receiving notice. The available text of the report ends before stating the Board's disposition of his pharmaceutical technician registration.
