On July 13, 2017, the South Dakota Attorney General announced that the state's Medicaid Fraud Control Unit had joined a nationwide coordinated health care fraud sweep with federal, state and local law enforcement partners. Nationally, the sweep produced criminal and civil charges against 412 individuals.
South Dakota's two cases both involved alleged drug diversion by medication aides, one in Yankton County and one in Turner County. In this case, a medication aide was charged with one count of ingesting a substance other than alcohol to become intoxicated, a class 1 misdemeanor under South Dakota law.
The release does not say which substance was involved, where the aide worked, how the conduct came to light, or whether the case has been resolved. A charge is an allegation, not a finding of guilt.
